How To Replace Ford Shocks

Thinking about bringing your Ford F-150 to the shop to have the shocks replaced? There’s another option that’s much cheaper, and it’s replacing the shocks yourself. It’s actually easier than it sounds. You may not even need to lift your truck. You'll need a few basic tools, and this set of instructions.

The Tools You’ll Need

Here's a list of tools you need to gather together before starting the job:

  • 18 mm standard socket & ratchet wrench
  • 18 mm wrench
  • Impact wrench or breaker bar
  • Small pry bar

First Things First: Buying Replacement Shocks

Before tackling the project, you need to get a set of replacement shocks. We suggest getting OEM shocks over aftermarket shocks for many reasons listed here.

OEM replacement shocks can be pretty pricey, especially if you purchase them at a Ford dealership. However, they’re pretty affordable when you order them from us. We offer wholesale pricing for genuine OEM Ford shocks. Look up your Ford in our catalog to see if we have shocks for your car!

The Replacement Process

When you have your replacement shocks ready, it’s time to install them on your Ford. To do this, take the following steps:

  1. Locate the lower end of the shock and then loosen the mounting bolt. Remove the nut, but leave the bolt in place.
  2. Remove the mounting bolt from the upper end of the shock.
  3. Put the tip of the pry bar between the lower end of the shock and the shock mount.
  4. Put enough pressure on the pry bar so that you can remove the bolt.
  5. Hang onto the shock while sliding the bottom end out of the mount.
  6. Install the new shock in the reverse order of removal.
